Hot! (and Breakfast)

This weekend has been very hot. Forecast yesterday was 42, however our patio would have been hotter than that as it traps the heat. The temperature though dropped significantly overnight to a high of 30, I think the drop comes because the wind changes direction. The wind over the weekend was coming from over the Sahara and it’s like being stood in front of a heat gun.

To make things worse – we had a scheduled power cut on Sunday, which although we don’t have air conditioning, we certainly use fans a lot when it’s hot – and we didn’t half miss them! It also meant we didn’t have electricity for breakfast.

The good news, however, was that when Ian was taking a look to see what things we’d like to take with us from the garages, he found our old gas cooker which we both thought we’d disposed of. This was great news as most houses in our price range won’t have a kitchen, and we’d thought we’d be using just the gas hob I have in my workshop, so this means we’ll be able to toast our crumpets still 🙂 It was hidden away in a corner and needed a bit of a clean up – but here it is in use!

Breakfast Al Fresco

So we sat in the back yard to have breakfast. It was very nice and the difference in temperature between the patio and the yard was noticable.

You will see in our pic that we are quite brilliant at growing prickly pears! On the right hand side, our prickly pears now are over wall height – and these were the ones we started from single pads. We (I) may be particularly non-green-thumbed for most things – but we don’t seem to have a problem with prickly pears – just a shame doing anything with them entails death by a million cactus stabs.

I found this receipt stuck away in a bag, and it made me smile. It’s from 2016 and it’s obviously me stocking up from Asda, brown sauce and beanfeasts 😉

Move

Nothing much more to report on the move. Ian has drawn up a list with everything we want to take, along with measurements, and he’ll now send it to some removal companies to get a quote. It’s actually been quite difficult to get a quote as, although many have online quote forms, they ask standard questions like ‘number of bedrooms’, which doesn’t really give much of a representation of the things we have. We won’t be taking a lot of stuff (we’ll probably single handedly stock the next jumble sale in support of the English Cemetery in Elvas) – but even so, we’ve probably got quite an unusual range of things to take (and that doesn’t include the animals!). Hopefully we’ll get some quotes back soon so we can work out what’s what and make some better plans.
