Donacella’s Cave

We’d read about Donacella’s cave which is the other side of Viveiro (pooping nativity scene town). We had to go to the police station there to get our address changed on our residency cards (which didn’t happen), so we thought we’d take a detour to see the cave.

Ian says this is the first time he’s seen a sign at a tourist attraction that suggest four possible different ways of dying (bottom left of pic)

However to get to it we would have had to go through this tunnel

and the cave opened up somewhere in this cliff. So beautiful as it seemed, we declined to explore further. The heady mix of tall cliffs, going through tiny tunnels, caves with sheer drops was just too much adventure!

The scenery was amazing, but even to take this photo, we were quaking slightly stood on the end of what appeared to be a perilous cliff. There are absolutely no fences, barriers or anything – just you and the cliff edge!

And of course we found another beach – here it is looking back on it from near the cave. The cave would be at the right of the beach as we look at the sea in the video below:

More Iron

And completely coincidently, when we went to the cave, we passed an old iron ore foundary and loading dock which has been turned into a visitor area.

Part of the foundary now turned into a viewing plaform.
Looking down from the viewing platform, we were able to walk all around – including in tunnels under the rocks, which we didn’t do as we weren’t sure if they were supposed to be open, but we did walk to the end of the viewing dock.
View from the end of the viewing dock, with the fishing boats coming in and out of the port at Viveiro.
Another cave!

And just can’t get over the colour of the water – this photo doesn’t really do it justice.

Engravings showing how it would have looked.

When we got home I had a look online for some of the history as there wasn’t that much information actually at the site. I found this photo of the foundry when it was working. This would have been pre-eucalyptus trees – look how different the landscape is. We’ll try to find the place this was taken from and take a pic – however I bet we end up taking a photo of a eucalyptus tree as that covers the whole area now.

Outside Light

Here’s Ian wiring up our outside light, Millie stood in the doorway. He had to put in a new outdoor cable and wiring, hence the wellies!! But it all went smoothly with no shocks of any kind. This is now working and it’s pretty good. It gives enough light that we can see most of the front garden and it’s quite bright near the house.
