This was our huerta at the beginning of May

And this is it now ?

Looking at it I can see we’ve made a few mistakes! We’ve planted things too close together. I hadn’t anticipated that the marrow plants were going to be quite so gigantic, and neither of us expected the tomatoes to be quite like they are. Some of them are getting surprisingly tall. We’ve noticed our neighbours staking their tomatoes with big stakes, which is why we did similar, and I am so glad we did!!! I originally staked them with little bits of bamboo.
Weeds are a challenge, the nettles, ferns and brambles still try to come up. We’re doing a lot a LOT of weeding to regain control!
We have a row of seeds which just didn’t grow – thanks, I think, to birds. And this has went weed-crazy. We didn’t pull up the weeds as we couldn’t tell the difference between weeds and plants, but it’s now quite apparent we’ve just got a row of weeds and which is now an empty row and a bit pile of weeds!
It’s been difficult keeping on top of the watering as we’ve had a very dry few weeks. However we had rain yesterday and I am absolutely certain that everything grew a few cms overnight!
Ta-Dah…

No more table forming a gate!! We now have a lovely fence and gate and can park the car off the road. It wasn’t really a problem parking outside, as there isn’t anyone else living in our part of the hamlet, however although they don’t live here, there are some people who come daily to tend to their huertas – so it gives more space,
