Not the Cathedral Beach

We needed to go to one of the bigger towns for some bits and bobs so on the way back, we went to visit some beaches we hadn’t been to before. We were driving on the coast road the other side of Foz on this little stretch of coastline.

We have been here before as this is where Las Catedral beach is, which is one of the most famous beaches in Spain. While it is an impressive beach, I think part of its mystery is that it can only be seen during low tide – and it can get very busy. We went last year I think in February – and it was pretty busy even then. During the summer they have to limit numbers and you need a ticket to visit, so it’s really very much not like basically any other beach in the area!

However, I we knew that there were other beaches along this coast so decided to take a look.

We found this little beach which was pebbly and I managed to collect a LOT of pebbles for tumbling.

And then we found another beach which was like a smaller (and empty) version of las catedral, with lots of little caves and rocks.

And a lot of bits of quartz. I should have taken a hammer with us 🙂

When I got back I realized a lot of the pebbles I had picked were (I think) quartz. Looking at the big seam of quartz in the photo above – this probably explains why.

I put some of the pebbles straight in the tumbler – all the ones I think are quartz. I have some more to go in after which I think are agates.

Strange

Looking out the kitchen window, I noticed the top of the electric pole opposite appears to have bent. I am guessing this is the ivy toppling over, but it did look a bit odd. We’re debating if we should report this to someone and if so who…

When life gives you lemons…

One thing that I haven’t really got used to yet is the number of lemon trees around – and the number of lemons. The man who comes in to tend the huerta in front of us gave us a big bag of lemons and he has several trees which are full of them. Ian wonders if it’s because of the fish that’s eaten here. I don’t see any lemon based drinks/preserves/sauces etc in the shops, so it’s hard to think of any reason why there’d be so many lemons otherwise.

Anyway, last year I preserved the lemons we were given in brine, and they worked well, so I’ve done the same this year. We still have all three lemons we got from our own tree – but given our house and lemon tree were completely covered in ivy – the tree would have looked like the electric pole in the pic above a couple of years ago, so I think it probably did well to produce any this year!

…and

another colourful sunrise. Clearly not a very good photo – but the colours which stretch across the sky are really quite amazing!
