We’re saying good bye to our stove. We’ve never really used it – something to do with the rich mix of gas and wood burner put us off. It would have been quite a thing in its day (it is now, but not for the right reasons) – but surprisingly the gas pipes running through the wood burning bit meant this style of stove never caught on and it is pretty unusual (maybe all the others blew up…)

So we decided to take it out and replace it with what was probably there originally! Which is much the same but without the gas.
These stoves are built out of brick with the cast iron top and iron front and doors added separately. We found someone selling the doors and top in Burela and Ian is going to build the inside. There’s a bit of an art to it, as the bricks also need to hold heat to make it a good heat source as well as for the wood to burn cleanly. However, this type of stove is super-popular in this part of Spain, so there’s quite a lot of info about how to do it and how to maintain it.
This is a picture of what we bought – it was from the ad, it’s on its side.

This will be for heating and for cooking in the winter. We don’t have any heating at the moment which, while the house isn’t freezing, it’s not warm and cozy either, so it will be nice to have something like this.
