I thought Ian had mysteriously hacked down a clump of lilies by the car – but couldn’t think why he would have done it overnight. When I asked him, he looked at me oddly, obviously wondering why I would think he was a night time lily chopper. We mused over the pile of fallen lilies for quite a while as it had been done with such energy. Bits of lilies were scattered all over the place.
We wondered if it could be vandalism, but what a very odd thing to happen – who is going to go round hacking down lily patches at night – particularly when ours is an obviously lived in house and there are plenty of empty or abandoned properties around which would surely be easier.
Then I remembered the boars that I’ve seen – one on the other side of the road on the path to the beach, and when we moved in I saw two youngish ones in the field in the back.
Anyway, a little googling shows that boars like the roots of lilies, which is why they chopped them down with such gusto, flinging lily bits far and wide.
The boar can’t get into the garden – but did get to one of the bags I am growing potatoes in. So we moved that.
Lilies grow like weeds, so we weren’t too disappointed, but we’ll probably not encourage these lilies to come back so as not to encourage the boar!
I noticed a few bits of netting appearing further down the road today around huertas, so I guess we weren’t the only one the boar visited!
