Acclimitised

Ian and I have been congratulating ourselves on the fact we appear to be acclimatizing – to the weather – as we don’t seem to have suffered with the heat.

We put this down to a number of things – this year we just don’t go outside in the afternoon, in previous years we’ve stayed outside until we’ve been forced in through heat. We don’t eat until late, we drink lots of water, pull the blinds down during the afternoon, walk in the shade….

…and it definitely seems to have worked. Oh, that and the fact that the weather has been, in fact, cooler than in previous years. I walked out this afternoon into a wall of heat – our back patting was premature!

Today we are on ‘yellow alert’ which is part of a traffic light system that was introduced after the heat wave in 2003 when many thousands of people died. There was one positive outcome from our horrible Bridge End experience, and that was we didn’t have the money to use on the house when we first moved in. We were dead set on putting in picture windows upstairs and if we had, we’d have rendered the upstairs absolutely out of bounds. Our idea of ‘letting in the beautiful sunlight’ would have created a solar oven!! So there you are – there is always a silver lining somewhere!!
