It was with rising hysteria that I found another snake on the floor of the bedroom. Admittedly this new one was substantially smaller – however I did not necessarily take this as a good sign as it obviously meant that the other snake had left a nest somewhere under the bed.
Ian came like superhero, ready to change into leather gauntlets and running shoes – only to point out that it was, in fact, a shoe lace.
Well, this presents another mystery as we only wear crocs, so goodness know who’s been creeping round the house throwing shoelaces around. Our pups are very bad at many things, but one thing they are good at is not chewing shoes. Poor Billy was the only chewer. Although I wouldn’t put it past them and I certainly wouldn’t tempt them with a brand new shoe on the floor, Henry is much too keen to guard a shoe than to let anyone chew it. All in all, however, I think I’d rather have the mystery of the shoelace, then the story of the snake nest.
W did see the smallest ever gecko this week. He was so cute – had big feet and looked just like a cartoon. He was probably about an inch long.
Oh yes, we also had an ant raid. The ants who live by the wall raided the nest by the house. That was very brutal. They emptied the nest and we saw them carrying eggs, dead ants and all sorts across the patio.
No sign of any eggs yet. Our chickens are amazingly lazy. When we go to let them out in the morning there is generally a bit of shoving while the chicken nearest to the door gets pushed out out. He then pops his head out, has a quick look round and immediately goes back to bed again. Our chickens at Mineral House bowled us over when the came flying out of their shed and spent the day roaming miles. Ours haven’t roamed through a quarter of the back yard yet – generally making it to the door for food and then sitting under the van. This lack of energy would appear just to be our chickens as we’ve seen other chickens out roaming through fields early in the morning. Ours just sit there waiting for their food. I still wonder if this is where they haven’t had an adult chicken roll model – I do wonder what would happen now if we introduced them to a chicken who knew how to roam! I can understand them siesta-ing in the heat, but they do seem to have an all day siesta, followed by an early night!
