Charlie’s Medication

Charlie’s anti-seizure medication is a real game-changer. I know the effectiveness will wear off – but for now it’s making a massive difference. The medication doesn’t stop the seizures – well it doesn’t stop the first, but it stops the recurring ones that form a cluster which is where the damage is done. Depending on the severity it could take days for her to return to ‘normal’ after a cluster of seizures.

It works for dogs who have seizures that come in clusters – it wouldn’t be effective for dogs that have single seizures. But in our experience, both Sam and Bobbins had clusters of seizures, and Charlie did too.

She takes the new medication in tablet form for few days after the seizure and that’s it. Because she just has the one she comes round much quicker – and I’m not certain, but I wonder if it also affects the severity of the seizure as her last one, which was last week which is why I was thinking about it – was really quite mild.

And because our house is so much smaller now, it would be days of her bumping into things. Both when she was coming round and sometimes during the seizure itself if we weren’t there when it happened. When we took her to the vet as an emergency when she was bleeding, that was because she’d hit her nose when she was having the seizure.

It would have made a big difference with Bobbins and Sam, however no point in looking back and we’re just greatful we have access to it now.

If and when the effectiveness is lost, she can then start taking other medication, but we’ll wait and see how things go…
