Chestnut Scrumping

We decided to go chestnut scrumping and have seen a few trees around us and the man who comes to tend his huerta occasionally opposite told us there there are some good trees.

We took a big rucksack to fill up with chestnuts as we were full of enthusiasm!

But goodness me they are prickly (the Spanish word for their casing is ‘hedgehog’). Our enthusiasm soon waned, and we came back with a very small selection!

I’ve seen people with what looks like fishing nets on top of sticks, and I’m not sure what they use them for, but each time they’ve been walking down towards the chestnut trees, so I wonder if they use them some how to pick them from the floor to save the prickles, but that doesn’t explain how they remove them without stabbing themselves. We will have to follow someone next time we see them 🙂

We were walking around where the eucluptys trees were chopped down earlier this year. Look how quickly they have started to grow back. These are taller than Ian and the whole area was cleared at the start of the year.

And this is a photo from where we were stood looking back. We get a different view of the hamlet from there, with a horrior in better condition than ours hidden away there.
