I now have a student called Jesus. He is a teenager and after he didn’t turn up to a class without telling me, I asked him to email me if he can’t attend future classes. I therefore got an email saying ‘I am Jesus, I am not coming to class today’. I wonder when I will stop finding this funny.
I think it was made more funny by the way that he introduced himself ‘I am Jesus…’. In English, we introduce ourselves on the phone and in messages in the third person, so we say ‘it’s Kate’. I don’t know why we do that, but in Spanish they introduce themselves in the first person, which I suppose is more logical.
