We went out and came home to find a little cat sat on the window ledge on the barn side of the house. This is a bit of a suprise as where he/she is sat is difficult to get to as this is where the ceiling has collapsed and also the root above is collapsing so it’s a little dangerous – but I guess the cat felt he had enough lives to give it a go! I think he must get through the little window in the wall and then make his way upstairs and to the window. It is a lovely sunny spot though so I’m not surprised a cat would choose this to sit and contemplate.
The funny thing is, while there are lots of cats around here – which I think are fed not strays, if not pets as we’d think of them (perhaps more like barn cats), we never saw them near our house until Roland died. Then it was like an open invitation and we had a load of cats come and just sit on our garden looking at us. The weren’t even from the same family as we recognized ones we’ve seen both up and down the road. We both wondered if it was something to do with Roland, who while a very gentle and introverted cat, did approach life by choosing the most difficult option possible – so instead of standing on the ground to drink water, he would balance himself on the rim of the water bowl, or instead of taking a careful route down off something, he’d drop off the other edge. Of course we know he was blind and that’s how he did things – but I wonder if the cats looked at him and wondered what sort of crazy animal we had here – and very much chose to keep their distance!
Anyway, it seemed as soon as he was gone they came to investigate – and then almost as suddenly as they started to appear – they disappeared and while we see them around still, they don’t come in the garden like they did. Clearly the novelty wore off! It was certainly odd – two weeks of cats sitting and staring at us and then nothing!
But perhaps that’s because they are all congregating now in the barn side of the house (I do hear noises sometimes at night – thinking about it, I think I’d prefer to think it was a cat rather than something more spooky!!!)
Babbity doesn’t seem phased at all but she does go out so may well have become friends with the other cats- and Primrose probably wouldn’t know as she is blind and can’t go out of the garden and spends her time either outside sleeping in the sun on the bench or inside sleeping somewhere.
