Ice Cream Anniversary

It is a little known fact that the symbol of the 5th wedding anniversary is Ice Cream. So with our wedding anniversary looming, we decided to treat ourselves to one.

OK – so that is not true about ice cream and wedding anniversaries, I think, sadly no 5 is celebrated with something much less exciting. But it is true that we have bought ourselves an ice cream maker.

A super-dooper top of the range machine which has its own freezer so we don’t need to pre freeze the bowl. This might seem a little odd, seeing that we have a kitchen with no cooker, a fridge/freezer that the previous people would otherwise have taken to the tip and a microwave which is marginally less efficient at heating food than putting something on the top of a slightly warm radiator for several days. And perhaps it could be argued that there are other things that are more useful (ie windows) – but we did say we would buy ourselves something special this year as last year I was in hospital and we didn’t celebrate it.

It arrived yesterday – from Italy. So we know have an italian pizza oven and an italian ice cream maker.

Rather than waiting till our anniversary we tried it yesterday. So far we have had chocolate ice cream – made with real chocolate and cream, orange sorbet, coffee and whisky followed by gin and tonic sorbet. As this was all in the space of yesterday afternoon, we both went to bed feeling decidedly green and not quite as exited by the prospect of the new day’s ice creams as we might have been.

Today I am making kiwi fruit and yogurt – with our home made yogurt which we have been making in a thermos flask (on purpose – this isn’t something we found growing at the bottom of an unwashed flask). Slightly more healthy than ice cream…
