We were at the vet yesterday when driving back we saw this very dark line on the horizon. Ian knew what it was – it’s a kind of mirage and it creates an illusion where you can see things the other side of the horizon but they appear to be hovering in the sky or distorted. But we haven’t seen one before. It’s not very obvious from the photo, but it’s a dark blue line which follows the line of the horizon.
I cropped the pic to show the line a bit better. This line is a mirage, reflecting what is the other side of the horizon.

So we stopped the car and took a better look to see if we could see anything. And we did! We needed the binoculars, however we could see a ship the other side of the horizon.
I couldn’t take a photo as we were looking through binoculars, however we saw something that looked very much like this:

The photo is from the newspaper and this is almost exactly what we saw, where a mirage distorted the boat and made it into a sort of castle.
Delightfully, this phenomenon is called fata morgana which is Italian for Morgan the Fairy.
