Shiny Things

Last night we sat and marveled at our shiny cutlery, glasses and saucepans. Unfortunately, as our plates are plastic, we were unable to wash them in our new dishwasher, but we’ll look to get some new terracotta plates over the weekend.

We’ve been exactly a year now without washing up facilities, and the novelty has started to wear off slightly. Well, to be frank, it started to wear off about 11 months ago! So our new dishwasher has pride of place next to Ian’s computer. Hopefully we’ll get the kitchen sorted in the new year and that will be a major step forward!

The house is feeling decidedly not cold. I am not sure whether this is because the weather is unseasonably warm, or because we have windows that shut. What we have noticed is that it has been unseasonably dry. We went for a walk last weekend and where there used to be a stream crossing the road there is now just a dry patch. We used to have to jump across the stream in a couple of leaps. But thinking about it, I don’t think that the rain really arrived until after Christmas last year, when it appeared to rain constantly for two months when the builders were here.

We’re currently on the hunt for wood. It would be nice to use our stoves when it gets cold, however we don’t have any wood so can’t even try them. Most people use wood from their olive groves to burn in their under table braseras as they cut their trees back this time of year, so as most people are self-sufficient when it comes to wood for burning, there isn’t a ready supply of logs. We did think about going out scrumping wood from olive groves, but decided that this was probably very bad form. Ian also pointed out that the fallen tree that I suggested we bring home would not fit in the car and, in the absence of a chain saw, would be remaining where it is. We’ll probably end up buying a load and getting it delivered.
