This….

is why we initially staked our tomatoes with tiny stakes – this is our previous attempt at tomato growing and they didn’t get much taller than my knees!

And why we have had to stake and restake our tomatoes several times as we had no idea they grew so tall!

We know we’ve made some mistakes – we’ve got our plants too close together and we weren’t rigerous enough with cutting off the off-shoots. But we’ll know what to do next year.

More Huerta Pics

I’ve taken a few pics of the huerta which we can use as reference for next year at the end of the first four months. We’ve dug the potatoes up, and the first onions, we have some unidentified green leafy things, the calabaza peregino plants have formed a ‘hedge’ across the back of the garden, our artichoke has flowered (I think next year we can pick the er, buds?), we’ve got lots of cucumbers in the front garden and I’d defo plant them again there.

We’ve got three sacks of potatoes which we are drying out and the onions are drying out – with the exception of the ones I macramed together 😉 The aim is to store these, we’ve currently got the potatoes in the box room, which should be OK. I’,m not sure what rodents we have downstairs.

We’ve harvested the broccoli and cauliflower and one thing I’ve learned is not to plant lots of them which all are ready for picking at the same time! Same goes with lettuces – but I’ve been sewing new ones every couple of weeks, so that’s more manigable.

And quite frankly – what was I thinking of planting so many calabazin plants (cougette/marrow – same word in Spanish).

And our dwarf beans are beaning – but they really are dwarf! Not sure if we’ve got an exceptionally dwarf variety!

I don’t think we’ll bother with radishes or carrots again as they take up a surprising amount of space. We’ve grown some rocket which has been a great success, so we’ll defo do that again.

We’ve got strawberries and raspberries. The strawberries are fruiting for a second time, which I didn’t realize they did, and we had a couple of raspberries, but the plant was new, so hopefully more next year!

And our lemon tree as a fruit – which we’re pleased about as it’s been abandoned and will take some work to get it back to good fruiting health again (apparently – as advised by a neighbour). The orange and grapefruit tree both have fruit, but I guess really we shouldn’t expect anyting until next year.

What we DIDN’T plant but will next year:

Kiwi – absolutely EVERYONE has a kiwi or two, I take this as a sign they grow well! Grapevine, Ludvig likes grapes so it would be nice to have a supply for him – and we used to like our grapes which was the only thing we did have success with! Avacado – I would like a tree and we’ve seen them in the plant nursery, but I’m not sure that there’s one in any neighbouring huertas, although I’m not certain I’d recognize one.

Dye plants – I wanted to plant some dye plants, but I was too late, so that will be in the plan for next year.

So next for the huerta is to plant some more onions and potatoes…
