We drove up to their house, up the very steep hill into Feria and didn’t see anything unusual. When we were there we were talking about our plans and they commented that we ought to look for a house round their new embalse, to which we both smiled politely thinking that they were talking about a small pond which might have been built for cattle or something. Anyway, when we left and started to go back down the hill, what did we see in front of us but a massive lake!
Yesterday it was a bit cooler and we had to go shopping so we decided to go shopping in Zafra and then take a look at the new embalse for a picnic and quick look. It is quite strange as it has obviously only just been filled (it started being filled in 2010) and it still looked round the edge like it had been flooded – which of course is what has happened – as there are a load of trees with their tops poking out of the water, and tracks disappearing into the water. We had a brief argument about whether there would be any fish in a lake this new, which was settled once we saw a couple of fishermen set up on the bank. But I don’t think they would be finding any of the fishy monsters in the older embalses. There were a couple of lakeside farm houses, which wouldn’t have been lakeside just a few years ago. We’re hoping that these farm houses will now be considered worthless if the farm land has been lost under the water, however given the situation of these farm houses now my guess is that the situation will have gone the other way.
This lake is so new that it doesn’t show up yet on any maps and we now need to research whether there are any other new damns in Extremadura and soon-to-be-lakes we need to explore.
We left Bobbins at home yesterday in her puppy crate. She missed her lunch, which she certainly let us know about, but apart from that she didn’t seem too phased. We’re lucky she is happy in her crate as it makes life a lot easier as we know she’s not going to bump/fall off/into something while we’re not around.
