Serious question – what happens eventually to the feather shaft … does it fall out when the new feather is fully through?
I don’t know, I have had a quick look through my poultry books and on Google but can’t find any detail. I am wondering now if the whole feather is new, and we didn’t notice the quill coming through. I’m off now to grab another moulting hen to study her. No wonder they are not laying!
