Why has that chick got it’s legs taped together?

We have a bandy legged chick. It’s legs are stuck out at right angles from its body. It is a known problem and is called Splayed Leg. The remedy is to make little splints and to stick its little legs together with tape. Poor thing obvioulsy couldn’t walk and couldn’t really stand so we made a little box for him and propped him up in it. After a false start or too (he managed to remove the tape) he is now quite confident and balanced and we have let him ‘free’ into a bigger box on his own. We have not put him with the others as little chicks can be quite evil when they want. Hopefully after a week we can untape his legs and they will have set in a normal way.

We’ve got quite a few chicks at the moment, with another gruesome one that looks not unlike Richard the Third, hunched up and lopsided. One of the gruesome twosome was like this and turned out to be a healthy looking chicken, so hopefully the gruesomeness will wear off.

Flat is finished and tennants in. As always it was 11th hour stuff, with Ian doing some wiring on the morning before they moved in. As it was we had to put it back a day as we didn’t have everything finished. There were a lot of ‘bits’ that needed doing. So far they have not reported the fact that the hot tap in the bathroom isn’t working. So either they have mended it, or as young outdoor instuctors, hot water is for wimps!

Alston agricultural show today – we have a stall so fingers crossed for good weather.
