Welcome to our Blog

This is Day One of our Blog. Being a Monday it was back to the Monday grindstone, however today was cheered up by the fact that I need a stud name for our male angora rabbit, who with co-operation of lady angora rabbit is going to give us a starter er warren (?) of angora rabbits whose fibre we are going to turn into wonderous things. So, let me introduce you to our stud, Muffin.

And his lady friend Crumpet.

Oh how I chuckled, and suddenly Monday didn’t seem too bad anymore! This is part of our fibre plan, we have our angora goats and our sheep, and now angora rabbits. All we need to do is to learn how to spin. Oh, and weave.

I also noted today that our two recent chicks who, although less than a week old took an instant dislike to each other each time we put one in with the other one and it was chick wars, when we put them in a new box ie neutral territory have bonded and now are happily cheeping together.

They are living in our spare bedroom. One of these was saved from Mother Hen, who took it upon herself to ‘help’ her chicks out, I don’t think it mattered if the chicks were ready at all and she created carnage, a bit like a Sam PECKinpar film (pun intended as it took all day to think of). The little one that we saved was very premature and looked a bit grusome for a day or so, all twisted and one eye shut. I didn’t think that a little chick could look quite so horrible. However he (he’s bound to be a HE isn’t he) is now a little ball of yellow fluff. One that had hatched and survived Mother Hens helping is a couple of days older and has started to get his proper feathers through.

Tiny our little ram lamb came to see us this morning. And had a cuddle. He has been out roaming with him mum and we have not seen too much of him recently (his Mum takes them off for a wander round the fields) but he is still very affectionate and seemed pleased to see us this morning (and not because we had sheep feed with us).

Today put an advert out for our lamb ladies. They are now fully weaned and are growing well, they will make a good starter heard. We thought about keeping Lambey and Freckles but – we are farmers now….

  1. Sounds like the family is growing! Angora rabbits, did’nt hear about them? Total number must be above 57 now even with the losses?
